All I know is that sometimes you have to be wary
Of a miracle too good to be true.
All I know is that sometimes the truth is contrary to
Everything in life you thought you knew.
All I know is that sometimes you have to be wary
'Cause sometimes the target is you.
YARRR! In honor of International Talk Like A Pirate Day, we have “The Wreckers.”
Ah, but this song isn’t about the fun Jack Sparrow kind of pirates. Peart found inspiration for these lyrics in Daphne du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn, in which a band of pirates would send up distress signals to lure rescue ships onto rocks, where the vessels would subsequently crash and sink. As the people drowned, the pirates would pillage the rescue ships for their supplies.
This is a pretty rad song, musically. The guitar and bass line both do unexpected work, with the bass line mirroring the melody Geddy is singing, while Alex establishes a grunge-like rhythm on his guitar.
That’s no accident: Apparently, “The Wreckers” had its roots in a jam session in which Alex and Geddy switched instruments—literaly pirating each other’s sound. Worked out well for them, didn’t it?
