8/7: COVER: 2112 Overture (Dave Grohl, Nick Raskulinecz, and Taylor Hawkins)
Come for the rad cover, stay for the kimonos.
What can I say about Foo Fighters covering Rush? I mean, you know this cover is going to be exquisite. It’s not even a question.
Dave Grohl is a huge Rush fanboy, and he brings such energy and presence to this collab with the late Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins. Long time Foo producer Nick Raskulinecz steps in to handle bass.
The highlight for me is around the 2:45 mark—the part of the song when typically the live audience shouts “HEY! HEY!” and pumps their fists over and over. Instead of revving the volume and energy as the original tune does, their cover strips the moment down to its fundamentals. First, guitar. Then, drums. Together, they build and build toward that gigantic, cataclysmic, Foo Fighters-style release. Ugh, I love it. Just listen already:
For an extra treat, though, you’ve gotta see these guys perform “Overture” live at the 2013 Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame to induct—who else?—Rush. The costumes alone will make your entire day:
