5/9: COVER: Discovery (Vitamin String Quartet)
Have a pretty song done in a very pretty way. Also, violins.
We’ve had an intense few days on this blog, haven’t we? Holocausts, genocide, the genesis of evil, saxophones… It’s just been a whole lot.
So today I give you a lovely take of a lovely song: The Vitamin String Quartet’s take on “Discovery.”
This gentle cover, infused with surf sounds and seagull song, transports the setting from a cave to a beach, but still it captures the original’s sense of wonder. You can hear the hero’s curiosity; you can hear him figure out, in real time, how this marvelous device he has found works. And when the solo violin comes in, instead of the vocal monologue, it’s surprising yet so very fitting.
As the tempo speeds up, you can hear the hero running along the beach, racing back to share what he has found. We know it doesn’t end up particularly happily for our hero. But in this moment, this creative spark, he discovers a universe of possibility.
