It seems to me
As we make our own few circles 'round the sun
We get it backwards
And our seven years go by like one.
Today is apparently National Take Your Dog To Work Day in the U.S., which I think is probably the best excuse for a holiday ever devised.
The first time I heard “Dog Years,” I didn’t expect to fall in love. And the guys apparently didn’t think much of it, either: Apparently Neil wrote the lyrics while hung-over, and he never considered it one of his best efforts.
Yet “Dog Years” grew on me in the Hemingway fashion—slowly, slowly, then all at once—and now I can’t imagine the Rush catalogue without it.
What speaks to me about this song is the sweetness of the lyrics, and how well they pair with the rather straightforward melody and rhythm. This isn’t a song in love with its own cleverness, but that’s okay—dogs typically aren’t in love with their own cleverness, either.
How lucky we humans are to have dogs, and how terrible it is to love a creature with such a comparatively short life span. Every day with them is a gift. A reminder to not let things go by too fast, and to enjoy the moment and go outside and play.
How did I not choose this one for my dog songs post? And better yet, why didn't you reprimand me for it? Maybe you did and I blocked it out.
As a dog walker, everyday is Bring Your Dog to Work Day for me. Interesting that Neil says the dog has his tail between his ears. That's one long tail! Must be some sort of exotic Canadian breed!
I really like this song too. I also remember some people online getting quite upset about it though, because it has that naughty word "bitch." FFS! I thought it (and Sirius/serious) were clever word play.
