“Momo's Dance Party” is a solo Neil Peart recorded for Modern Drummer magazine, but the song is also available on A Work in Progress, a short documentary film about the making of Test for Echo and how Neil’s drumming style had evolved.
It's a cool little track! Funky xylophones and wind instruments give the rhythm a sweetness that just feels, well, fun. Neil sounds like he’s having a blast with this one.
Apparently, some of the ideas he used in this song were later reappropriated for other drum solos, just like “Pieces of Eight.” However, unlike “Pieces of Eight,” I find it harder to pick out precisely what in “Momo’s Dance Party” Neil used later on. The song feels more Roll the Bones-ish than anything else, but by this point that album was in the rear view mirror.
Anyway, enjoy Neil goofin’ around on his electronic drum kit, making a summery, fun solo just for the hell of it:
That was cool
