Thanks for highlighting the problematic parts of that song. I didn't pay much attention because as you mentioned, it's a banger. Will have to go back and listen to that album now.
Counterparts is one of their best, IMO. The more I listen to it, the more I want to listen to it.
A lot of people hated the sound of Vapor Trails when it first came out, but it was a natural evolution from Counterparts, IMO -- just separated by 5-ish years.
Huh. I never considered "Animate" to be even close to a love song—but I was introduced to Jung's ideas as a psychology major; some of them still intrigue me.
I do appreciate that you don't blithely assert that every word Neil put on paper is above reproach. That kind of adulation drove me away from the Rush community on Twitter.
Thanks! Peart obviously is a brilliant writer, but even geniuses have their off days. (Wait 'til we get to Tai Shan LOL.) What I love about him is that he didn't just think about things, he wrote *through* them, meaning you can see his thought process evolve over time. He tests out ideas, refines them, keeps what works and discards the rest. It's a joy to see the evolution, even when (especially when?) it gets messy.
I never paid much attention to the meaning or context of this song, so i really appreciate you giving the backstory. I just remember hearing this and thinking, “Rush are back!” It was so visceral and the first time since maybe Signals that I felt that full bodied reaction from a Rush opening track.

It is SUCH a banger, as the kids say.
